The hypothalamic-pituitary axis regulates practically hormones specific to the secretion of endocrine glands. The hypothalamus secretes hormones that act on the pituitary gland, which in turn secretes hormones that act on other endocrine glands (thyroid gland, adrenal glands, ovaries, testicles, etc.) or act at other levels in the body (prolactin, vasopressin, ocitocin, etc.).
Hormonal secretion is regulated from the hypothalamic-pituitary axis through a fine feedback mechanism: if hormone levels are low, the pituitary sends the message to the endocrine glands to secrete a larger amount of hormones if hormone levels are elevated the opposite phenomenon, the pituitary gland signals endocrine glands to reduce secretion. The pathology of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis affects the secretion of hormones in the endocrine glands it controls.
